The Small Planet Workshop is hosting another round of Air-Tight Construction Workshops on the Product and Method from the Swiss Company Siga.

These workshops are “hands on” application workshops using the tapes and membranes from Siga. There are 2 locations where you can catch these:

Seattle WA 1/18, Olympia WA 1/19

The workshop will start with building physics and move to Air-Tight Construction based on an increasing vapor permeable gradient assembly.

The workshops are free and held at the local business: Home Show Daily in Seattle and Sunset Air in Olympia.

Healthy Home Training for Building Professionals

This seven-week course for construction and design professionals focuses on incorporating sustainable, healthy and energy-efficient building techniques in residential construction. The class will cover and explain the indoor air quality techniques designated by several green building programs. Extensive in-depth information and resources will be discussed, which can be directly applied to daily practices.

All topics address impacts associated with the practical applications of healthy building techniques. Classes are taught by national and regional experts in the field. Attendees will learn healthy construction techniques, visit a model healthy home and gain greater understanding of the benefits of indoor air quality to better meet their customer's needs.

This training satisfies the coursework required for Health House Builder certification.

Who should attend: Builders, architects, planners, sanitarians, building inspectors, facilities managers, tribal housing authorities, health care professionals, and community outreach workers. Opportunities to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available.

Workshop Track Descriptions:

  • Indoor Air Quality and Health -Health- People spend over 90% of their time indoors, and indoor air pollution can reach 100 times the concentration as outdoor air. Where you live, work, and go to school can have an impact on your health. Come and learn how you can identify indoor air pollution sources and ways to mitigate and improve your indoor air.
  • Homes, Indoor airPLUS and Energy Star – Come and learn all the new and exciting improvement and upgrades for existing homes, new energy saving features for new homes (ENERGY STAR and Home Star), and options to improve healthy indoor living (Indoor airPLUS). ENERGY STAR, and Home Star
  • Green Buildings – How can we improve our current buildings to make them more energy efficient? Come and learn more about LEED and Built Green programs and other technologies you could do to make you building healthier, more energy efficient and marketable.
  • Sustainable Communities – Come and learn from city planners and urban developers on sustainable community designs. Concepts to improve a community’s accessibility.

Free training at South Seattle Community College High Performance Buildings: The Integration of Science & Sustainability

A class that examines how high‐performing buildings function, highlights career pathways in this field and teaches methods of determining building sustainability.

  • During classroom and hands–on training you will:
  • Develop an ENERGY STAR Portfolio Management evaluation
  • Complete a LEED Existing Building O&M draft checklist
  • Perform a sustainability audit of your project building
  • Write a proposal to improve the overall sustainability of your project building

South Seattle Community College and the Workforce Development Council of Seattle – King County are teaming up to provide two hands-on training sessions for career development in Commercial Building Sustainability. Classes begin in January 2011 and will be held at the Georgetown Campus of South Seattle Community College.

High Performance Buildings: The Integration of Science & Sustainability

A class that examines how high‐performing buildings function, highlights career pathways in this field and teaches methods of determining building sustainability.

Description: This 44 hour course provides an overview of the terms & technology used to define high performance building and sustainability function. It is intended to provide building decision makers and students with an understanding of current and future jobs and job functions associated with building sustainability management and guide their future career choices. During this course students will review the LEED‐EBOM process and fill out a LEED checklist for a specific project. They will also be introduced to the Energy Star Portfolio Manager and learn to input facility and utility data. The course includes a final project to document a building’s sustainability status.

Level 1 Commercial Energy Auditing
Learn techniques of commercial building auditing for energy efficiency and conservation improvements.

Description: This 160 hour course combines class and field study to teach the basics of auditing a commercial facility for energy use. It includes curriculum that is certification‐based for systems. The successful graduate will be able to assess and report on the status of energy use for simple commercial buildings and recommend a path forward for further investigation, upgrade and improvement.

WSU Level 1 Thermography Training

I am not sure if any of of you still need IR training, but WSU Energy Extension Program and Snell Group are offering a really good deal on Level 1 Thermography for Buildings training here in Seattle on December 7th-10th.

There are some open spots…. But they may go fast.
