Introduction to Thermography for Building Sciences Seminar with Michael Stuart and Home Performance Washington | Thermal Imaging Blog from Fluke Thermography

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

On Thursday, January 20 in our backyard (Seattle, WA),  Michael Stuart of Fluke Thermal Imaging will give an all-day seminar on the basics of thermography for building sciences. Hosted by Home Performance Washington (HPW), this 6-8 hour seminar will cover the capabilities and limitations of infrared thermography technology, applications of the technology (with a primary focus on building science), tips, tricks and best practices for using thermal imagers in buildings applications, and more!

Michael will also introduce you to the basics of how to use your camera or thermal imaging system to:

  • Inspect
  • Diagnose
  • Confirm that the job was done properly
  • Build your business

And in order to practice what is being preached, there will be hands-on time with thermal imagers/cameras, including experiments to help put your learning to test. Participants are encouraged to bring their own thermal imagers, as a limited number of imagers will be available for shared use by participants.

The Mini-B Passive House showcases efficiency at the PNA

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Neighbors and visitors to the Phinney Neighborhood Center might be wondering why a small house showed up in the lower parking lot last weekend. No, we haven’t decided to build a mobile home community in our parking lot to bring in extra revenue—it’s the Mini-B Passive House, demonstrating super-efficient building techniques at the PNA for the next 6 months—starting with an open house on January 15.

Watch a green home get built in one day

Monday, December 6th, 2010

I wanted to extend an invitation to Home Performance Washington to witness the assembly of Seattle’s first LEED Platinum (targeting certification) modular home on Tuesday, December 7th.  Transported via truck from the factory in Idaho, six boxes (measuring 12’ wide, 20’ long and 16’ high) will be installed one-at-a-time by crane onto the foundation, forming this prefab demonstration home.  The three bed/2.75 bath 1,790 square-foot single-family home is the brainchild of Seattle-based Greenfab, a provider of sustainable, well-designed homes and communities with the long-term vision to encourage mainstream use of modular construction to provide healthier homes at a more affordable price point.

For a preview of how a prefabricated modular home is put together, watch this time-lapse video.  Greenfab also has videos of its project’s progress at www.greenfab-media.com/videos.

Located on a previously undeveloped portion of a subdivided property, the Greenfab demonstration home is an example of true urban infill.  The home is being built to target LEED for Homes Platinum, Built Green 5-Star+ and Energy Star certification standards.  Greenfab is targeting net-zero energy and aiming to meet the goals set by the 2030 Challenge, which demands all new buildings achieve a fossil fuel reduction of 60-percent for 2010, a 100-percent reduction (carbon neutral) by 2030.

Refer to the newsletter below for time and location details.  And stay tuned for more information regarding invite-only behind-the-scenes tours in December.  We will be offering Home Performance Washington a sneak peak of this forward-thinking modular home.
